MA in Journalism and Public Affairs

Print, Broadcast (13 months, full time) / Interactive Journalism (20 months, Saturdays)

Goals

For more than 30 years the School of Communication has prepared students for careers in both the print and broadcast journalism fields. Students graduate with an impressive portfolio, reflecting their work across platforms; they are able to tell a story in any form, print, radio, television, or online. SOC takes great pride in constantly updating this program to reflect the cutting edge of today’s technology, all the while with an eye to the future of the industry.

Courses

The program has two tracks, Print and Broadcast. All students will begin their program with an intensive three week summer course, Principles and Practices of Journalism, also known as Boot Camp. As part of this course students will learn to write, report, and produce for a variety of media platforms. In both tracks, students will gain a solid foundation in writing for multiple media, communication theory, and professional ethics, as well as substantial production experience. While students will choose either the Print or Broadcast track, convergence training is stressed.

Resources

Students have access to SOC’s own Media Production Center (MPC), which features the finest in video, audio, and film equipment. In addition, SOC is home to the Eric A. Friedheim Journalism Center, located on the third floor of Mary Graydon Center, where journalism students can get the feel of working in a newsroom environment.
