Kat Aaron Receives Prestigious Fellow

Kat Aaron, project editor of What Went Wrong, has been named as an Alicia Patterson Fellow for 2012. The prestigious Patterson fellowship will allow Aaron to continue her reporting into the functioning of the nation's civil courts system. Grad Student Selected for 2012 Women Immigrants Fellowship Program

Graduate journalism student and SOC Washington Post fellow Luz Lazo was selected by New America Media as one of 10 fellows for its 2012 Women Immigrants  Fellowship Program. The fellowship, sponsored by Atlantic  Philanthropies, aims to expand news reporting on the intersection of  immigration and gender. Fellows will meet for a two-day training in  Washington, D.C. and will produce stories later this year that will be published on New America Media and  in their own media outlets.

Two SOC students win ANWC scholarships

The American News Women’s Club has awarded SOC students Stefanie Dazio and Sareen Hairabedian scholarships for 2011. The aspiring journalism scholars each received $3,000 awards at the 2011 ANWC 17th Annual Gala and Tribute April 7 honoring public radio pioneer Diane Rehm. Dazio is a double major in print journalism and CLEG , and Managing Editor for News at AU’s The Eagle and a contributing writer to the Student Press Law Center.  Hairabedian is majoring in Film & Media Arts.  A Jordanian of Armenian origin, she is living alone in the US for study, and hopes to bring a unique lens to her films. Her goal is to raise awareness of social issues by telling individual stories with her camera.

American University seniors Alex Priest and Ethan Klapper’s social media skills helped launch their post-college careers well before their graduation day.USAToday.com featured an upcoming social media conference Priest helped organize, and he participated in Twestival — an event that uses Twitter to fund-raise for charities. MediaBistro/FishbowlDC featured Klapper after National Journal hired him as an online editor.

Alum Wins 4 Emmys in 2 Years

For most, winning four Emmy awards would be an impressive accomplishment for a lifetime of work, but AU alumna Janet Rodriguez, SOC/BA ’06, has earned a lifetime’s worth of Emmys in a mere two years and shows no signs of slowing down. Working for the Phoenix affiliate of Telemundo, the world’s second-largest producer of Spanish-language television programming, Rodriguez has won regional Rocky Mountain Emmy awards for her intrepid reporting on local issues. The Radio Television Digital News Foundation (RTDNF) will honor Fox News correspondent Rick Leventhal, SOC/BA '86, in recognition of the upcoming 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.  Leventhal will be joined by honorees from other outlets "who covered the attacks with essential and intrepid reporting".

The Board of Directors and Trustees of the Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) Foundation awarded FMA alum Richard Paul the esteemed Gracie Award for his audio documentary Rocketgirls and Astronettes in the Outstanding Documentary category. His  submission was described as displaying superior quality in writing, production and programming. Read more

Alumna Publishes Article for Huffington Post on Journalism Reinvention

Graduating from American University in '73 with a MA in Communication, Janet Janjigian has gone from producing for NBC News, to Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications at MGM Studios to her own consulting business.  Recently, in an article in the Huffington Post, Janjigian wrote about the ever-changing medium of journalism and how journalists are reinventing themselves in order to accommodate these changes.  Read more

Alumni to Make Jump From "Good Morning America" to "World News"

Polson Kanneth graduated in 2005 with a BA in Journalism.  Kanneth later went on to work for ABC's "Good Morning America" in DC, and now, he's making the move from "GMA" to "World News" in New York City.  Recently, a party was thrown to send Kanneth off where ABC's Rick Klein and Amy Walter were spotted, in addition to other news network notables.  Read more

SOC Alum Presents Research on Hair Braiding

PC alumna Arliene T. Penn presented her research at the 95th Annual Association of African American Life and History (ASALH) in October in Raleigh, N.C.  Penn’s research focuses on the connection between West Africans and African Americans through hair braiding and how the art form intersects commerce and culture.  She conducted her research in Columbia Heights, D.C. and Harlem, N.Y. in 2009 for an assignment in one of her AU Print Journalism classes.  Penn also presented her work at the Annual Virginia Social Science Association Conference that was held at Virginia State University in March this past year.
