Mentoring Program
SOC's unique mentoring program is brought to you through a partnership between the School of Communication, AU Career Center, and SOC Development Team. It is a program that bridges the gap between the classroom and the professional world as students prepare for future careers in communication. Each year SOC students who are admitted to the program are paired with thriving SOC alumni for career advice. Whether it is guiding mentees toward the solidification of short and long term career goals, sharing tips to improve resumes and portfolios or helping students network their way into the communication fields, professional mentors are an invaluable source of knowledge and experience for students. “The SOC Alumni Mentoring Program was an incredibly rewarding experience for me. I still keep in touch with my mentor, Carey Earle, and she was definitely instrumental in helping me to make the right decision in choosing my current job.”
— Erin Bijas, BA, ’05 Senior Account Executive, MWW Group
American University chapter of PRSSA
The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the only student organization at AU devoted to the understanding and practice of public relations. As a member, you can get involved in the Society's numerous national programs, gain exposure to professional development, leadership development, educational and networking opportunities.
The AU PRSSA hosts school-wide events to give its members a foothold into the professional world in the DC area as well as multiple regional conferences, such as “The PR Spin Cycle” in February 2008, that brought together PRSSA members from surrounding universities to network with PR professionals and learn about the latest trends in the industry. Find the AU PRSSA chapter on Facebook.
Internships
Internships are a way of life at SOC. The School of Communication offers undergrad and graduate students the opportunity to get course credit for one internship but most students have two or three, thanks to faculty and alumni who share their professional contacts.
