BA in Communication Studies
The goal of the School of Communication is to develop liberally-educated and professionally-trained communicators who are equipped, intellectually and ethically, to convey the issues of contemporary society.
Communication Studies is the newest major offered by the School of Communication. It's a great option if you want to develop a strong understanding of media and communication. As a Communication Studies major, you'll start with a series of required courses that introduce you to visual media, public relations and journalism and media ethics. After you complete your core courses, you take a series of media studies courses with a special focus. You can choose a concentration in Media and Government, History of the Media, Media and Society or International Media.
Admission to the Program
Students apply to American University, upon admission, they may choose any major offered by AU.
For current students, formal admission to the major requires a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale). Students should declare their major by the end of the sophomore year.
Students who are unable to achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 and declare a major in communication are not allowed to take courses in the school after they have completed 60 hours of undergraduate credit.
