Engaged Faculty
Our faculty members know how to use all the resources of Washington, DC -- the communication capital of the world and one of the largest media production centers in the country. Their classes draw on the region's rich professional expertise and feature, as guest lecturers, working professionals in the broadcast, cable, and online media, as well as government agencies, high tech firms and non-profit organizations.

Alumni Mentoring Program
Whether it is counseling mentees on their future career goals, sharing tips to improve resumes and portfolios or helping students land internships and job opportunities, professional mentors are an invaluable source of knowledge and experience for students.
Classroom in the Wild
This week-long, non-credit class is for both beginner and advanced filmmakers and photographers who have an interest in the environment, natural history and the outdoors. We’ll be snorkeling with manatees, filming from blinds, and exploring one of Florida’s most beautiful river environments.
Classroom in the Wild: Alaska
An 8-day intensive, non-credit course offered by CEF to AU students and alums. Students will be led by SOC professor and filmmaker Larry Engel and survival expert Brian Horner. This course is for students who have experience in production and are interested in environmental, wildlife, and expedition related filmmaking.
Summer in LA
Summer in L.A. is an intensive, 8-week seminar course featuring SOC's top alumni talent in the industry. The small cohort of upper-class and grad students get an insider's view from the pros and gain first-hand experience through internships with some of the biggest names in the business.
Study Abroad in Prague
The FAMU International Film Program is an enclave program designed for students highly motivated to produce and direct their own stories in super 16mm film. The Photography Program is for students with a background in photography who want to develop their skills and portfolios by working with master photographer, Miroslav Vojt?chovský.

- Lindsay Webster had internships at NBC’s Dateline and ABC’s Good Morning America.
- Philippa Levenberg worked on broadcasts for VOA.
- April Astor started her own magazine, Catalyst.
- Coryn Connelly-Cabreros interned at washingtonpost.com.
- Beth Gosselin worked with the Air Force at the Pentagon.
- Steve Dorsey interned at WBOC-TV in Salisbury, MD where he then landed a job as a reporter after graduating.
