Cultivating a Head Start
The SIS Alumni-Student Mentoring Program offers SIS undergraduate seniors an unparalleled opportunity to get a headstart on careerbuilding. Our program creates vital bridges between academic life and the realities that lie ahead in today’s job market. Taking into account career goals and educational interests, each eligible mentee is matched with an alumni mentor for a full academic year. The mentor serves as a sounding board and advisor and provides guidance on activities that can lead to achieving the mentee's goals. This program is not limited only to SIS Alumni based in the DC Metro Area. We welcome “e-mentors” as well. Alumni are able to mentor a student effectively, regardless of where one lives in the world. The program's rewards for students and alumni alike are meaningful and long-lasting.
2011-2012 Program Highlights
- 2011 - 2012 boasts the largest group to date: 34 mentors and 38 mentees
- 6 e-mentors and 3 e-mentees are participating in the program
- Half of the mentors are mentoring for a second or third time
- 100% of those who took the survey last year say they "would recommend the program"
Point of View: Mentors
"The mentees I’m working with this year are fantastic! They are on different paths, but are both extremely prepared, motivated, excited, feel comfortable asking what may seem like silly questions, do their ‘homework,’ and continue to explore new opportunities..... I meet with each every month or so, as their schedules permit to review where they’re at, brainstorm future possibilities, act as a sounding board, and connect them with others where I can."

Point of View: Mentees
"Things are going great. I sat down with Drew the other day and he shed a whole lot of insight into all sorts of careers both in and around the government. My approach and attitude towards finding a job in DC have been improved. Even better - I don't feel as afraid of the market. I had a great time with Drew, sitting with him way over our scheduled time."
