  • Professor Deborah Bräutigam's research focuses on China-Africa relations, foreign aid, industrialization, state-building, and development. She is the author of The Dragon's Gift: The Real Story of China in Africa(Oxford University Press, 2009) as well as publications on foreign aid and governance; taxation and state-building; global networks and comparative development in Africa and Asia. Her blog, chinaafricarealstory.com continues to delve into myths and realities of China's African engagement.

Research Interests

Dr. Brautigam is the author of The Dragon's Gift: The Real Story of China in Africa (Oxford University Press, 2009). She is working on several new projects. One analyzes the impact of China on the global aid regime. Another considers the role of global networks in enabling small states to manage globalization, with Mauritius as the central case.

is an expert on foreign aid, governance, and China-Africa relations. Her most recent book,The Dragon's Gift: the Real Story of China and Africa, was published by Oxford University Press in 2009. She is also the author of Aid Dependence and Governance (2000) and Chinese Aid and African Development (1998) and coeditor of Taxation and State-Building in Developing Countries (2008). Brautigam was a 2001–2002 scholar in residence at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. She has been awarded two Fulbright research awards, as well as grants from the Council on Foreign Relations, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the Smith Richardson Foundation. She has done consulting for the United Nations, the World Bank, the Africa Development Bank, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
