Located in Washington, DC, American University’s School of International Service is ranked consistently among the top ten schools of international relations. More than 3,000 students, from undergraduates to PhD candidates, representing 150 countries, are taught by over 100 full-time faculty. SIS’s policy-practitioner relationships and global university partnerships help to place 80 percent of its students in internships, and enable 40 percent of graduate students, and 80 percent of undergraduates, to study abroad. The School's faculty, practicing adjuncts and interdisciplinary curriculum prepare graduates for global service in government, non-profits and business.

Application Deadlines

Please note that graduate merit awards are typically available in the fall semester. SIS cannot consider applicants for graduate merit awards after the following deadlines.

PhD (fall admission only)

  • December 15

Masters Programs (fall admission)

  • January 15

IR Online Masters Program

  • March 11 (May 6 start)
  • June 10 (August 5 start)

Masters Programs (spring admission)

  • October 1 (domestic applicants)
  • September 15 (international applicants)

Executive Masters Program (MIS)

  • July 1 (fall admission, international applicants)
  • July 30 (fall admission, domestic applicants)
  • November 1 (spring admission, all applicants)

BA/MA Program*

  • March 1 (summer/fall admission)
  • June 15 (fall admission)
  • November 15 (spring admission)

*Students may apply for the BA/MA in the semester following the completion of their 75th academic credit.
