Research Support Group

The Research Support Group provides consultation for faculty in carrying out qualitative and/or quantitative research, as well as a forum for presenting ideas that use statistics. The Group provides advice on research design, data collection, and statistical analysis. This advice can apply to faculty research intended for academic publication or for sponsored faculty research. Previous work has included projects funded by both public and private groups.

Social Science Research Lab

Teaching faculty may utilize the Social Science Research Lab (SSRL) when using computer-based statistical software in classroom instruction. Faculty may request tutorials for their classes offered either during the faculty member's class time or outside of class hours; consult with the Group's staff regarding specific needs. Faculty members may also request one-on-one research tutorials for professional development.

The SSRL provides an outlet for receiving feedback on statistical research through the “Research Series” it sponsors. The series includes both seminars on advanced methods as well as forums for discussing preliminary statistical research findings. The series has discussed a variety of methods, ranging from using satellite data for measuring climate change to compiling indicators to forecast cases of conflict and environment.

American University is a member institute in the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the University of Michigan. ICPSR gathers, maintains and disburses a large number of data sets to users interested in Social Science research. This data is available to the entire university community for research purposes. The manager of the SSRL serves as an official ICPSR representative. To order ICPSR data, please contact the SSRL or for individual assistance with the use of ICPSR data and research methodology, please make an appointment with one of the SSRL staff members.
