Dr Seuss Day

Dr. Seuss Day is a birthday celebration of the famous author. Join the Center for Community Engagement and Service  and Read Across America in celebrating Dr. Seuss' Birthday! Volunteer to read and play literacy games with young children!

Dr. Seuss Day festivities represent more than just the celebration of a century of literary achievements by one of America's most beloved authors; the use of rhyming patterns make his books an effective tool for teaching young children the basic skills they need to be life-long readers. More importantly, literacy is a fundamental tool that helps ensure students reach their highest potential and develop into well-rounded leaders of tomorrow!!

On Friday, March 2nd approximately 49 volunteers visited three District Public elementary schools: Brightwood, Bruce Monroe, or Powell. The volunteers represented several student organizations, two notable groups were Sigma Chi, Alpha Phi Omega. The whole women's soccer team including Head Coach David Bucciero and assistant Coaches Anabel Jimenez and Megan Novak.


The volunteers reads two Dr. Seuss books; Green Eggs & Ham and The Sneetches, which address the issue of diversity and inclussion. The participants read to students in 40 classrooms, reaching over 700 D.C. youth on that day. The program started at 9:30am with a Dr. Seuss Day kick-off and ended with AU students back on campus at 12:00pm.
