Washington Semester Housing
Tenley Campus
Students in the Washington Semester Program are housed at American University's Tenley Campus, located on the corner of Nebraska and Wisconsin Avenues, NW. Tenley Campus is half a mile from the main campus and two blocks from the Tenleytown-AU Metro Stop on the Red Line. The University Shuttle provides transportation between main campus, Tenley Campus, and the Metro.
Students living on the Tenley Campus are housed in three residence halls. Congressional Hall with up to 173 students features the central reception desk, which is staffed 24-hours a day and is where all Tenley Campus residents check in. Capital Hall, housing 194 students, is the oldest and most ornate hall boasting a wide marble staircase and high-ceilinged rooms. It also houses the Tenley Fitness Center and Tenley Area Recreation Center (TARC). Federal Hall, housing up to 138 students, contains the mail room and the cafeteria (Tenley Cafe) on its first floor.
Signing Up for Housing
A link to the online application will be sent to you via e-mail by the Washington Semester Program Office. Once you have signed up for University housing, you are committed to living in the residence halls for the period noted. To withdraw without a late charge, a letter must be received in the Housing and Dining Programs Office by June 1st for the Fall semester or November 15th for the Spring semester. Please carefully read the Housing License Agreement for more information about late cancellation charges.
Personal Property Insurance
Check with your parents to see if any or all of your possessions are covered by their homeowner's insurance plan. Many plans cover student possessions while at school. While we certainly hope that it doesn't happen to you, possessions sometimes are stolen, lost or destroyed. The university is not responsible for loss of personal property.
Arriving On Campus
A schedule of when you are due at school will be linked to your assignment information on the my.american.edu portal. Most arrival dates are set for mid-week (the week before classes begin) for both the Fall and Spring semesters, so please plan accordingly. If you arrange to ship part or all of your personal belongings, plan to bring with you enough linens and clothing to last at least for the first few days. The Congressional desk will not be open to receive packages until check-in day and frequently shipping companies take 2-3 days to get all packages delivered.
