Dream is Green

Get Involved - Greening Your Office

  • Green Office - transportation

    Green Commute

Walk, bike, carpool, bus, metro. Pick your favorite and green your commute.

  • Green Office - paper

    Green Supplies

The average office worker in the US uses 10,000 sheets of copy paper each year. That’s four million tons of copy paper used annually. Print less and buy more sustainable paper when needed.

  • Green Office - energy

    Energy

Turn it off, turn it down, set it back, or unplug it. Opportunities to save energy abound in every office.

  • Green Office - waste

    Zero Waste

Almost everything used in an office can be recycled or composted. Learn what can be recycled on campus before sending waste to the landfill.

  • Green Office - food

    Food

Styrofoam will never biodegrade. Find alternative or reusable alternatives.

What's the difference between tap and bottled water? 1,000 years. Water bottles take over 1,000 years to biodegrade. Less than 20% are recycled.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO GREEN THE AMERICAN DREAM

AU's Office of Sustainability has launched the Green Office program to help faculty and staff green their office spaces and departments. Throughout the school year we focus on a different sustainability topic. For tips on each topic scroll through the images above or see the links below.

Each month has related tasks you can carry out in your work space or your whole department. To formally sign up for the Green Office program, email sustainability@american.edu for the scorecard and tracking tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • My office has already received the Eco Office Certification. Does this program replace that?

Yes. Contact the Office of Sustainability at sustainability@american.edu if your office has previously been certified and would like to earn the new Green Office (GO) designation.

  • What are the benefits to participating?

The Green Office Program is a step-by-step process that asks your office to make small changes each month to become more sustainable. Each month we will recognize the cumulative achievements of all offices as well as the office that has excelled on a given topic. At the end of the school year each office will receive a final score based on their achievements and be awarded at a closing event.

Just for participating you'll receive a sign to post. Each month as the office advances and completes the monthly theme, you'll receive a new sticker showing your progress.

  • What support will my office receive?

We ask that each office designate a staff Green Eagle to head up the program. Many offices will be matched with a student Green Eagle to assist in completing the office greening tasks. Additionally, staff Green Eagles from each office will meet monthly to receive resources and guidance from the Office of Sustainability for each theme and troubleshoot with the other participants.
