CAS Graduate Student Council

From Tara Mancini, CAS GSC president, 2009-2010:

The College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Student Council (CAS GSC) was established to be the unified representative voice of all CAS Graduate Students. In doing so, the CAS GSC seeks to improve the overall academic and social experiences of graduate students, while also facilitating communication among students and administration.

This coming school year I hope to increase the CAS GSC's presence on campus and also graduate student involvement in CAS GSC events. Currently, the CAS GSC is looking to recruit great team members who can contribute towards these goals and much more!

CAS GSC Presidential Elections

The College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Student Council will hold its presidential election from April 5-7, 2010. Polling will take place on-line through my.american.edu, and results will be announced on Friday, April 9th.

Please read the biographical information for each of our great candidates below.

Presidential Candidates (In Alphabetical Order)

Nicole Condon
Completing my first year in the Environmental Science M.S. program at American University has been exciting and genuinely satisfying. I worked for two years after I graduated from Eckerd College in Florida, and I couldn't wait to go back to school.  I enjoy taking classes in the interdisciplinary field of environmental science and look forward to a career in a field that I feel great passion for.

I have fallen in love with D.C. and all it has to offer, spending much of my free time exploring the museums, galleries, performing arts venues, and recreational areas. I am happiest when I am outside, and I am looking forward to experiencing D.C. in the warmer months ahead. My favorite outdoor activities are hiking, biking, and rock climbing. I consider myself an honest, goal-oriented organizer who understands the value of having a sense of humor.

I want to be involved with the Graduate Leadership Council because I strongly believe in the importance of the service it provides to the graduate student population. We are a busy, hard-working community of students who deserves to have numerous opportunities to experience the city we live in, interact with each other, enrich our academic experience, and enjoy the multidisciplinary environment that is the College of Arts and Sciences.  I sincerely hope that I will have the opportunity to represent and work with the diverse CAS student body as we enter the 2010-2011 school year.

Hannah Oliver
Cheers! My name is Hannah Oliver and I am about to complete my first year at AU as a candidate for the Masters in the Literature and serving on CAS GSC as a rep. Before coming to AU I served on my undergraduate's Student Government as parliamentarian, public relations chair, and secretary as well as competing on our national championship speech and debate team and serving as the student representative to my college's administration. I graduated with a degree in Theatre, Literature, Women's Studies and Social Entrepreneurship.  This past year I worked with the Graduate Speakers Series, designed the T Shirt for CAS students and worked with the rest of GSC to plan socials, outings in DC, and bring speakers to AU that are aimed at graduate students. We've made a lot of changes this year and used the funds entrusted to us by our fellow students and the college to better our AU community and our DC community, but there is always room for improvement! My plan for next year to is to continue to serve on the GSC to bring opportunities to the campus and build the relationships between the departments and I feel I could best do this as your College of Arts and Sciences President.

Relay for Life

April 17, 2010, Bender Arena, 8:00 p.m.
Fighting cancer is a team effort. The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone. At the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, our team will camp out overnight and take turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from cancer. By joining or donating to our team, you will be a part of a life-changing event that gives everyone in the community a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Please join our team, or visit Relay for Life for more information or to donate.

Shuttle Concerns

On October 8, 2009, the CAS GSC president attended a shuttle town hall meeting sponsored by student government. The vehicle maintenance staff is committed to providing the best possible service for all students and therefore welcomes your feedback in order to make improvements. If you have comments or concerns, please contact shuttle@american.edu and CC glc@american.edu so that the Graduate Leadership Council may also track and respond to graduate concerns.
