Take advantage of the Alumni Audit Program
We all know that American University is a prestigious educational institution. As an alum, you have gone through rigorous academic courses to prepare for what the real world offers. Just because you graduated does not mean that your time at American University is finished. Many alumni continue to take classes at American, whether for personal enjoyment, in anticipation of a career change, or in order to adapt to the ever-changing work environment. “The alumni audit is really a tremendous gift to alums. I feel fortunate to be able to take advantage of it,” said Frank Turner, SIS/BA ’00.
The Alumni Audit Program allows alumni to audit one class per semester for the nominal fee of $100 (plus course fees, if they apply). Please visit the Alumni Audit Program Web page for course offerings and guidelines on the registration process. The majority of classes are available for audit. Unfortunately, online classes are not available for auditing. As an auditor, you will not receive any credit for taking the class, nor will it show up on any official or unofficial transcripts. This program is simply for your personal benefit.
The Alumni Audit Program supports the Alumni Association Scholarship by donating $75 of your $100 registration fee to the scholarship’s endowment. The scholarship is awarded every other year to an AU freshman legacy student.
Another alum stated, “I have immensely enjoyed this opportunity...my impression of the University has skyrocketed...much different than 40 years ago! Students and professors are very warm and welcoming and the campus is beautiful!”
While the majority of alumni auditors graduated in the past 12 years, it is never too late to come back to campus to learn. Last semester, there were six alumni auditors who graduated before 1969, with our oldest auditor graduating in 1958. “Many thanks for this great program. I’m always amazed and pleased that the students seem to welcome us old timers,” stated one auditor.
During the Fall 2011 semester, 125 alumni took advantage of this program. We hope that each of you will consider auditing a class in the Spring 2012 or future semesters. Frank Turner stated, “The Alumni Audit seems too good to be true. To be able to take a University course, not to fulfill a requirement, but simply for the joy of learning and to do so for just $100 a class is a tremendous gift to all alumni. There is so much one can learn -- a new language, a new skill. I hope more alumni in the D.C. area take advantage of this."
